Free broadband – would you take it?

Business News, Technology | Posted by Katie

Next week sees the publication of the Digital Britain report which lays out plans for broadband for the next decade.  But Ofcom have completed a survey that has found 30% of the UK population are currently offline  and 43% of these wouldnt take up the offer of free broadband and a free computer if they were given the option.

Now I have to laugh, because if you read the full article on the BBC website here you will also see at the bottom of the page a little invitation : Are you one of the 30% of adults who do not have Internet access?  It goes on to ask for your views using an online form… am I the only one to see the fatal flaw in this question?

Is broadband as important as electricity & water?

Mad as it may sound that is what 73% of people polled by the government in the UK believe.  From our point of view we would find it virtually impossible to run our business without broadband and liken the effect of no internet connection to having a limb chopped off in the rare event that our connection goes down.  Is it because we have got used to it?  Or is it really an essential part of every day life now?  Interested to hear your comments, and if you want to read more about it then see here

An intuitive approach to online search from Microsoft, as their new search engine Bing is launched.  Bing uses the vertical search principle and works hard to provide focused user friendly results via four areas …

Microsoft says:
“Bing is specifically designed to build on the benefits of today’s search engines but begins to move beyond this experience with a new approach to user experience and intuitive tools to help customers make better decisions, focusing initially on four key vertical areas: making a purchase decision, planning a trip, researching a health condition or finding a local business.”

We have tried this and like it – ‘a fresh stylish approach to searching the net, which delivers relevent results’ - but will we all leave Google for it … time will tell. Try it yourself and let us know what you think http://www.bing.com/
